Navigating the AI Frontier Series 2 moves on from putting AI governance foundations in place to checking whether they actually work. This first session asks three practical questions: is your school clear about what it wants to achieve with AI, are the right people involved in decisions, and what needs to improve next?
Julia and Katie walk through six foundations of effective AI governance: strategic position, alignment with your values, risk appetite, ownership, operating model, and capability and capacity. They explain why governance should be proportionate to risk, why a human in the loop is only a safeguard if that person has the expertise, confidence and time to challenge AI output, and how the diamond formation brings teaching and learning, safeguarding, privacy and technology together with leadership.
The session includes a practical exercise to use with your own team, testing your arrangements against a proposal to introduce an AI study assistant for students aged 14 to 16, and closes with a Q&A on AI tools that schools build themselves, and why the same governance expectations still apply.
